Collage comes from the French word "coller", meaning "to paste." Artists started creating collages in the early 1900s. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque were two of the first artists to create in this medium.
The current definition of collage is: "An artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a
surface, often with unifying lines and color."
Mixed media art and collage are very hot right now in the creative world. I have several books and there is a crazy amount of information, ideas and techniques on the Internet. Feel free to experiment!!
Here's a great article about beginning collage: Collaging for Beginners
You have three options with this challenge.
1) Social Issue Collage
Research artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988) and his artwork. He was a collage artist who used his work to give voice to the African American experience in America. (Romare's website)
He dealt with daily life and social issues. If you choose this option, I will ask you to pick a social issue and create a collage that teaches about this issue and your feelings about it.
Include: facts and statistics about your issue, printed imagery, created imagery (your own artwork), lettering, quotes, etc.

2. Cut Paper Black and White Self Portrait/Important Person Portrait
Using black and white paper, cut pieces to create a self portrait of yourself from the waist up, holding an object that tells something about you. Include a border and as many details as you can. Then create a portrait of someone close to you OR someone famous that you like or admire.
3. Nonobjective Collage Series:
Choose five colors (including black and white) to use in a series of 4 collages. Repeat patterns and shapes so the pieces look like they belong in a group. Paint 12 x 18 light paper pieces texturally to use in the collages. You may also draw and paint right on the collages.
Here is a link to a contemporary Vermont collage artist who explored this idea: Jane Davies Studios
Check out her other work, too. She's got some great stuff on her website! Examples of her work below:
Reflection Questions:
1. What is the most important thing you have to pay attention to when creating a collage, no matter the subject matter?
2. Critique your work. What was successful about your collage(s), what did you struggle with, and what did you learn?
