Abstract Realism is an art form that combines elements of Realism (painting or drawing in a very realistic, concrete way) and Abstraction (distorting a subject matter in an expressive way by distorting
line/color/shape, etc.)
When the energy of these two forms of Art are combined, you can create something interesting, unique, and dynamic! There is no one way to do this process, but we are going to break it down to a series of steps and see what wonderful things you can come up with!
Here are some examples by contemporary artists (living and working today)
of the same subject matter to give you an idea of how wide open your interpretation can be:

of the same subject matter to give you an idea of how wide open your interpretation can be:
STEP 1: Choose a subject matter. For this exploration, a single subject is best
(either an object or an animal.)
STEP 2: Paint a background. Have fun with colors and textures! You'll be painting over this so don't
get so attached to it that you don't want to cover it up (at least parts of it.)
STEP 3: Sketch your subject matter over the background
STEP 4: Paint your subject, integrating parts of your background and adding extra color, line, texture, etc.
to create an expressive and unique artwork!
