Check out these contemporary artists who are working in the book arts:
* Lisa Kokin
* Brian Dettmer
* Susan Sironi
THEN:
1. Research and sketch: Research other book sculptures and use your sketchbook to brainstorm ideas.
2. Experiment: Play around with paper pieces to create structures and forms.
3. Add found materials and begin construction: You may add other found materials to your sculpture so keep your eyes and brain open to possibilities. When you feel like you have a solid idea, begin creating. Your sculpture will be viewed from all sides, so don't forget to think "in the round."
Remember to attach pieces carefully and hide all glue or other attachment methods.
Craftsmanship counts!
Reflection Questions:
1. How does looking at the work of other artists help you develop ideas? How do you make sure you are being inspired but NOT copying another artist's work?
2. Why is craftsmanship so important in creating a work of art?
3. Critique your sculpture and tell me what worked, what was a struggle and the grade you feel you deserve?
