Surrealism is a literary and artistic movement that began between World Wars I and II (1920’s) and continues in various forms today. It attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterized by fantastic imagery, dealings with the subconscious mind and putting objects and scenes together in ways they would not normally be found (Ex: a tiger in a classroom, a giant lightbulb with a kitchen set up inside it...). These works deliberately defy reason, but are usually portrayed realistically. (Sur-realism means “beyond realism.”) Two Surrealistic artists I would like you to know are Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte.
Drawing Assignment: Create a Surrealistic shaded drawing using real life objects and photographs. (Resources are a MUST!) Remember: you are combining objects and setting that do not usually go together.
If you need help brainstorming: Make a random list of 10 places/settings and another random list of objects and then see if you can put items from those two lists together in interesting ways.
Reflection Questions:
1) In what ways do skill building and personal expression come together to improve
your artwork?
2) What was most successful and what could have been improved in your Shaded Drawing
and WHY?
